Jonathan Pointer has always strived to say more in his work than merely painting a convincing portrait of an animal.
His work takes much inspiration from the style and realism of the great Victorian artists. His paintings have increasingly become involved with ‘Animal Narrative’; from everyday, factual behaviour depicting how the animal interacts with its environment, to a narrative that goes beyond what we can expect in nature and verging on the naïve, including direct inspiration and interpretation of old fables and other animal-related narratives.
His portfolio of work focuses primarily on British wildlife but trips to Europe, America and, notably, the Indian Sub-continent gives his work an international flavour. Subject matter is chosen entirely on the whimsical nature of what the artist enjoys painting, regardless of commerciality.
Jonathan trained in Natural History Illustration at Bournemouth & Poole College of Art & Design. He still occasionally works as an illustrator and has recently completed a collection of 14 stamps for the island of Gibraltar. He is currently working on a set of stamps for the World Wildlife Fund based on the Great Frigate bird.
He exhibits widely, including Birds in Art (USA), Christies Wildlife & Sporting Art auctions, and the Society of Wildlife Artists in London. He is represented by several major galleries and is now working on his next solo exhibition for Jonathan Cooper of Park Walk Gallery, London.
Jonathan lives with his wife and their small family of chickens in rural Berkshire.
